Holger Rune v Lorenzo Musetti Head to Head

Rune and Musetti have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Peniston No Match for Rune

Ryan Peniston had made a rare entry into the second round of a top-level tournament but that’s where his journey in the competition ended. Rune proved to be too good for the 265th-ranked player.

After having needed two tie-breakers to get past Maxime Cressy in the first round, Rune settled in more easily in this second round match. He was a break up after the second game of the encounter and while he faced a couple of break-points when he served at 5-3 in the opening set, he managed to save them both and clinch the set off his first set-point.

The second set saw something similar repeat. Rune earned a break of serve in the fifth game, saved a break-point in the eighth before ending the match in the 10th off his second match-point.

Rune hasn’t quite had a deep run on grass before this – in fact this has been his first instance of winning a match on this surface. He has already doubled the count and will now look to eke out a hat-trick of victories – only this time it will be against a player of pedigree.

Musetti Winner over Shelton

It wasn’t the most straightforward of wins for Musetti but he would be glad with his second successive quarterfinal appearance on grass this month.

Having made it to the last eight stage at the Stuttgart Open last week, Musetti followed it up with a straight-set win over Jan Choinski in the first round here and then defeated Ben Shelton in three sets in the second.

In a rather cagey encounter that lasted two hours and 13 minutes, Musetti carved out a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win over Shelton. There was one break of serve in each of the three sets but what needs to be quickly added here is Musetti did fritter away eight break-point opportunities.

Musetti, who like Rune, hadn’t won a match on grass before this, is now 4-1 on this surface for the season. It could well turn out to be a keen tussle as he looks to grab a semifinal berth and a move towards a career-high ranking as well in the process.

Rune v Musetti Prediction and Tip

This could go either way with neither player having shown grass court prowess before this and having suddenly won a couple of them. Three-setter in the offing.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Musetti to win a set: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 23.5 games in the match: 1/1
