Vekic Upsets Rybakina
Donna Vekic has just carved a huge upset in Berlin as she knocked out the number two seed and current Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.
The Croat needed a little over two hours to bag the win 6-7(1), 6-3, 6-4, winning 79% of the points behind the first serve. It was a good match from Rybakina, but Vekic was just too good that day.
In addition to her straight-set win over Varvara Gracheva in the opener, Donna is now 22-9 for the season.
The world number 23 has had an eventful season, which saw her reach the quarterfinal in the Australian Open and win the title in Monterrey. The 26-year-old had a muted spell on clay, however; sans for a fourth-round stint in Rome, she was beaten rather early in Paris, Madrid, and Stuttgart.
As a two-time WTA finalist in grass events, Vekic should be confident of her chances in the German Open.

Avanesyan does it Again
Elina Avanesyan is having herself a moment on the tour at the moment.
Just a couple of weeks ago, in the Roland Garros, she scripted history by becoming the first lucky loser in 35 years to reach the last 16. She fell in the final qualifying round in Paris to Kayla Day, but luck favoured her, and she earned a ticket into the main draw.
From that point on, she beat Belinda Bencic, Leolia Jeanjean, and Clara Tauson before losing to Karolina Muchova.
Now here in Berlin, the 20-year-old has carried that luck forward – this time by beating the #11 Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(7) – saving an incredible two match points in the final set tiebreak.
Avanesyan followed it with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Anna Blinkova in round two. Interestingly, she started as a lucky loser here as well after losing to Laura Siegemund in the qualifiers.
Elina is the current World No. 81 and looks poised to rise up further. She is 22-13 in 2023, with an ITF title from Wiesbaden and a semifinal run in San Luis Challenger being her notable highlights.
Vekic v Avanesyan Prediction and Tip
Vekic starts as the heavy favourite, but Avanesyan seems to have a bountiful lucky charm on her side. We cannot underestimate the chances of an upset here – especially with Elina priced at 3/1 to win.
Tips:
- Low-Risk Tip: Vekic to win: 2/5
- Moderate Risk Tip: Over 19.5 games: 5/6
