World no. 7 Andrey Rublev held off Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann in an hour and 40 minutes contest to reach the quarterfinals for the third time in Halle.
The 25-year-old Russian broke the German in the very first game of the match, but Hanfmann pulled back the break in the eighth game, only to lose a closely contested tiebreak.
Rublev got off to a flying start in the second set, building a 4-0 lead. Hanfmann did get a break back, but Rublev made sure there were no more setbacks as he held on to the one break advantage to close out the match 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.
Rublev, who beat China’s Wu Yibing in a two-hour-plus contest in the first round, won 74% points on his first delivery, converted 3 of 6 break points and struck 21 winners to beat the world no. 53 in the second round.
The Russian was a finalist in Halle in 2021 and a quarterfinalist in 2017.
The 13-time tour level champion is 29-12 this year. He has featured in three finals this year, winning in Monte-Carlo and finishing runner-up in Dubai and Banja Luka. Can he reach a fourth semifinal of the season by winning on Friday?

Tallon Griekspoor’s hot form on grass continued as he extended his uneaten run on the surface to 7-0 this season.
The Dutch player, who had beaten Jordan Thompson in the final of the Rosmalen Open last week, defeated sixth seed Hubert Hurkacz in a thrilling second round contest in Halle on Thursday.
The world no. 29 saved one match point in the third set tiebreak before converting his fifth match point for a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (10-8) victory.
Griekspoor, who lost out in the round of 16 last year, had begun his campaign with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Roberto Carballés Baena in the first round.
The Dutchman, who had also won the Maharashtra Open title earlier this year, is 23-10 in 2023. Can he reach a second grass court semifinal on Friday?
