Sherif Continues Her Move Up the Rankings

Mayar Sherif is coming of an excellent clay season, which saw her reach her maiden WTA 1000 quarterfinal in Madrid and claim back-to-back WTA 125 titles in Makarska and Valencia.

Thanks to those results, the 27-year-old Egyptian reached a career-high ranking of no. 31 this week.

She is currently on a 10-match winning streak with all of those wins coming in the two WTA 125 tournaments that she won.

Overall Sherif brings a 23-14 season record to Bad Homburg, where she will be playing her first-ever tour level main draw match on grass.

Sherif did play two grass court matches below, falling in the second qualifying round in Wimbledon in 2021.

She has featured in two WTA finals recently, winning the title in Emilia Romagna last year. Can she bring her clay court form to grass?

Meeting Sherif will be world no. 88 Anna-Lena Friedsam, who is 7-8 on the tour and 22-13 overall this season.

The 29-year-old German, who will be making her debut in Bad Homburg, reached back-to-back quarterfinals in Linz and Austin this year, but has made early exits from the other tournaments.

A two-time finalist at the tour level, Friedsam doesn’t have a great record on grass. Although she did win an ITF title in Ilkley, she has not been able to reach a single quarterfinal on grass at the tour level.

The last time Friedsam played a main draw match on grass at the tour level, it was in 2019. In the last two years she played in the qualifying rounds, but didn’t advance to the main draw.

Can she win her first main draw match on grass in four years?
