Sonego Showing Signs of Form

Lorenzo Sonego has played well on grass this year and more generally the Italian has been a very good performer on the surface for years. He has a career record on grass of 20 wins and 15 losses while this year he has a record of 2 wins and 2 losses.

Now that might not look that impressive but his play has been generally really solid. He beat Matteo Berrettini in Stuttgart losing to a very strong O’Connell after that. He then made his way to Halle where he beat Karatsev but then lost to Sinner.

He’s certainly capable of beating a lot of solid players on the surface but he can also still be beaten. Sonego tends to be quite up and down as a player which his record of 17-16 overall this year confirms. The serve is his main weapon on grass but it can be hit and miss.

Not having played against Zheng is a minus for him because the Chinese player can surprise and has surprised players before this.

Zhang Struggles on Grass

Zhizhen Zheng has had a really solid clay season playing some great tennis but he is not able to transform that on the grass. His serve is a major weapon, it did a lot of damage on clay but on grass so far it hasn’t been so effective. It’s not the fault of the serve, it’s mostly because he hasn’t played on the surface that match.

His career record is 6-7 so far with it being 0-2 this year. Stuttgart was the first event he played and he ran into Jan-Lennard Struff who ended up in the final. A loss but not a terrible one. He then made his way to Halle where he had to play qualifiers but lost to a native player who is not that greatly ranked.

Now that was a very disappointing loss and indicates that the Chinese player still has a lot of things to finetune for his grass tennis to click.

This matchup is a tough one for him as he will need to play much better than he did so far. Sonego will play his usual game and if he doesn’t match up to that, Zhang will likely be beaten.

Sonego v Zhang Prediction and Tip

This one is an interesting matchup but for the most Sonego should win. He’s played better on the surface this year, has played more on it generally and I do think that he’s better on his best day. He could produce a shockingly poor effort as well but I think he’ll get it done.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Sonego to win: 1/2
