First Match on Grass For Etcheverry

Tomas Etcheverry last played at Roland Garros where he put together an impressive performance making his way to the quarter-final losing to Zverev. The Argentine player is a great clay player that is enjoying his breakout season with a few finals and a good run in Paris.

He has a record of 26-15 this year but most of those wins came on clay (22 of them). He played only a handful of matches so far on grass (4) losing three of them. This year saw him play zero so far and it’s not really expected that he’ll do particularly well.

He can certainly play on the surface and do well because he has a good serve and likes to play attacking tennis but the movement is a problem for him as he didn’t play that much on it in the past.

It will be tough beating Wolf who looks like a more natural fit on the surface but stranger things have happened. In ways Etcheverry played better tennis than Wolf this year and he’s ranked higher but that’s mostly due to a superb level on clay.

Wolf Eyeing Some Wins

J. J. Wolf is a more natural fit on grass than his opponent but in reality, he actually played fewer matches on the surface. He played only three matches so far in his career on the surface and all three happened this year. He’s 1-2 which is quite similar to his overall record for the year (15-14).

Wolf is a typical player from the US with a good serve and great forehand. He plays his best tennis on hard and that’s where he will earn most of his money. Grass can be a decent surface for him but he hasn’t played much on it so far. He needs more experience on it and perhaps next year or in two years we’ll see some good stuff from Wolf.

The only win he had came over a worse player while the two losses came against players on a similar level. Both were American which was interesting.

This match should be a winnable one for him because he’s playing against a player who hasn’t played that on this surface and hasn’t played in weeks.

Etcheverry v Wolf Prediction and Tip

Realistically, Wolf should be able to win this match. A loss for Wolf here would be very surprising to me but not shocking. I do think he’ll get it done and I like the odd.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Wolf to win: 4/6
