Kvitova Wins Berlin Title

Petra Kvitova stepped up when it mattered and even at 33, showed once again she can still deliver at this level on her favorite surface.

The Czech made it through to the Berlin final after laying waste to Caroline Garcia and Ekaterina Alexandrova on Saturday. Despite Friday’s postponement of matches due to heavy rain, Kvitova did not wilt in beating two heavy hitters on grass.

She was hampered by a right foot injury for the entire clay-court swing, playing in just two tournaments, and losing in the first round in Madrid and Roland Garros.

That raised some serious questions on her potential chances of contending for Wimbledon. But on the evidence of her flawless run in Germany’s capital, we can safely say Kvitova is back.

At the time of writing, Kvitova had won the second title of the season. She has already won a title in Miami in early April and is scheduled to defend her title in Eastbourne next week, starting in a rematch of last year’s final against Jelena Ostapenko.

Ostapenko Fights Back to Reach Birmingham Final

It’s not only Kvitova who will contest a final this weekend, but Jelena Ostapenko played in her fourth successive three-setter on Saturday, coming from a set down to defeat Anastasia Potapova 5-7 6-2 6-4 in the Birmingham semifinal.

She has been up against it throughout the week but survived just barely. Ostapenko is scheduled to play Barbora Krejcikova in Sunday’s final.

Immediately after the final in Birmingham, Ostapenko will make the near 200-mile journey to Eastbourne where she will look to continue her excellent run of results there.

Ostapenko has reached the final in each of the last two seasons in England’s southeast coast and hoisted the title in 2021 where she defeated the likes of Jabeur, Kasatkina, and Rybakina to win the whole thing.

The big-hitting Latvian is 23-12 for the season but has yet to win a trophy this year, making just one semifinal before this week.

Matches between Kvitova and OStapenko tend to be fast and furious. These two can tear the cover off the ball when on song. Right now, it looks like Kvitova is not having any sort of physical ailments that impacted her clay-court season. Should be the clear-cut favorite.
