Rybakina Surprised in Berlin

As a world number three and as a player coming into the grass swing having won the previous Wimbledon there is a definite sense of expectation on Rybakina’s shoulders. And at the Berlin Open last week, things did not go as well as those expectations might have been.

After having eased past Polina Kudermetova in the first round, Rybakina was set up to feature against Donna Vekic in the second and had gone in as a 1/5 favourite.

Those odds shortened considerably when Rybakina scooped up the first set but what followed would be a bit of a worry for Rybakina. She fell to a 6-3, 6-4 defeat in the next two sets to crash out of the tournament with a few question-marks around her form on grass.

The one mitigating factor is it was no different for Rybakina even last year. She had started off with a first round win at Rosmalen but lost in the second round there before crashing out of the Eastbourne International in the very first round.

And the Kazakh had then gone on to win Wimbledon.

Wang Makes it Through the Qualifiers Again

At the highest level, Wang has won just one main draw match on grass in her her career. That had come in 2021 in Nottingham where she had defeated the unheralded Martina Di Giuseppe before crashing out in the next.

This year, she has had to come through the qualifiers at both the grass tournaments she has participated in – at Birmingham she overcame Emily Appleton and Viktoriya Tomova before losing to Rebecca Marino in a hard-fought three-setter.

Here, Wang has already overcome Dalma Galfi and the upcoming star and world number 57 Linda Fruhvirtova in the qualifiers. Unfortunately for her she has been drawn to take on a player who is difficult to overcome most times but even more so on grass.

Expect Wang to not go down without a fight but can she actually push Rybakina into a third?
