Back to Back Grass Quarterfinals for Mannarino

He is 34 years old but Mannarino’s tennis seems to aging rather well. Once ranked 22nd in the world, Mannarino might be a tad outside the top 40 of the rankings now but he has maintained that on a consistent basis.

And a part of the reason for that is despite his aging body, Mannarino has managed some excellent results against top-ranked players. On grass itself this season, Mannarino has taken down two solid opponents.

At the Rosmalen Open, after having defeated Arthur Fils in the first round, Mannarino stunned Daniil Medvedev in the second. He followed it up with wins over Liam Broady and Taylor Fritz at the Queen’s competition.

What Mannarino could be a touch disappointed by is the quarterfinal losses that followed, including one of them to Jordan Thompson.

Pella Edges Past Giron

He is now ranked 334th in the world but even in his prime which had seen Pella reach a career-high of 20th in the world, he had rarely done too well on grass.

Which is why coming into his opener here at Mallorca, Pella was a 15/4 to surprise Marcos Giron in the first round. Those odds lengthened considerably when he lost the opening set but a shock reversal later, Pella went on to shock Giron 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3) to register a rare win on grass.

In a match lasting two hours and 21 minutes, Pella edged past his opponent to set up this second round meeting with Mannarino.

Despite facing 13 break-points in the match and getting four times, he managed to pull through to the final set. In that decider, Giron went 2-0 up, only to drop his serve in the very next game from which point on Pella dropped nine points on his own serve.

And then in the tie-breaker that followed, he broke away from 3-2 to win 7-3.

Can he now get past Mannarino?
