Pegula Starting her Grass Swing

America’s top-ranked ranked tennis player Jessica Pegula is set to compete in her first grass tournament of the season.

The current World No. 4 (#3 on the doubles tour) is coming off a pretty decent year. She is 29-10, with her highlights being the runner-up feat in Doha and numerous late-stage appearances in big-ticket events like WTA Dubai, Miami Open, Charleston Open, and Madrid Open.

Pegula was a runner-up in Madrid and Italian Open doubles, and a semifinalist at the Roland Garros – all with Coco Gauff.

As for her form on grass, this is one turf which she is yet to master. Wimbledon remains the only Slam where she has not reached a quarterfinal (yet) while on the surface, Jessica has never made it to a final – singles or doubles.

Last year, Pegula closed grass at 2-1 and the year before at 4-3.

Zheng Starts Slow

China’s Qinwen Zheng is coming off a first-round exit in Berlin at the hands of Veronika Kudermetova. She lost that match 4-6, 2-6.

The current World No. 24 has had an erratic spell on the tour so far; the switch to grass either may or may not help her case.

For instance, on clay, the 20-year-old reached the quarterfinal in Rome and round three in Madrid – but in the French Open, she was dismissed early by Yulia Putintseva.

Similarly, Zheng also featured in the semifinal in WTA Abu Dhabi, but that great run was sandwiched between rather early losses in the Australian Open and WTA Doha.

All things considered, her record is now at 17-11. As for her overall record on grass, the youngster hasn’t had a lot of exposure yet, with her best result being a round-three stint at Wimbledon in 2022.

Zheng v Pegula Prediction and Tip

Pegula is the odds-on favourite here but given that this is a grass match where neither seems to be in their element, anything can happen. Expect an entertaining affair.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Pegula to win: 4/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
