Paul Needs A Consistent Run
Earlier this season, Paul had made the semifinal of the Australian Open and followed that up with a title-decider showing at the Acapulco Open. He would also go on to make it to the fourth round at both, the Indian Wells Open and the Miami Masters, setting him up for a place in the top 20 of the ATP Rankings.
Since then, however, Paul has struggled to get going with the results barely going his way.
Now one might argue that clay isn’t quite Paul’s most preferred surface and those results were bound to happen but even a quick switch over to grass hasn’t changed things around for him,
At the Stuttgart Open, Paul was knocked out in the second round by Jan-Lennard Struff. He was forced to go through the qualifiers at the Queen’s competition last week and while he made the main draw, Paul was then edged out by Francisco Cerundolo in the opener.
Here, he is up against a clay-court specialist and that should give him a good chance to make it through to the last eight. Or it will expose his issues on surfaces outside of hardcourts again.

Baez Eases Past Borges
He is ranked 44th in the world but Baez had come into his opening round match against Nuno Borges as a distant second-favourite. And that wasn’t too surprising either given Baez had won just two grass court matches in his career before this and opted not to feature in any grass competitions this season.
Baez had come prepared though and in a match that barely lasted for any sort of time, the Argentine came through in straight sets. He won 6-3, 6-4 to make it to the second round.
Known for his performances on clay, Baez’s challenges looked to be also compounded by his sudden loss of form on that surface. The Argentine hadn’t made it too far at either the Madrid or Rome Masters and then fallen in the first round of the French Open too.
He now takes on a fellow player who struggles on grass and that could give him a chance to extend his run on this surface.
Paul v Baez Prediction and Tip
Interesting to see that Paul is a 1/10 favourite to win this and we will have to go with his win but at those odds it’s not worth it. Instead we could see some sort of a fight that could even take the match to a third set.
Tips:
- Moderate Risk Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 5/6
