Fokina Coming off Opening Queen’s Loss
Starting out his grass court campaign for the season at the Queen’s Club Championships last week, Fokina did not last too long there.
Taking on Jiri Lehecka in the opener at that tournament, Fokina fell to a straight-set loss to his Czech opponent, leaving him with this being the only tournament where he can try and win a match or two in the lead-up to Wimbledon.
While getting a first round bye, which is what Fokina’s got in this competition, makes things easier for players usually, tournaments like these in the lead-up to a Grand Slam might have a different purpose for some players.
Like Fokina would like to get as many matches in early in the week so that he also gets a break before the start of Wimbledon. What an opening bye has done here is to reduce that chance, making it tougher for him.
First things first though, and Fokina will hope he can carve out a win here.

Kotov Gains Li Revenge
Kotov had been bounced out of the tournament in the qualifiers, losing to Tu Li in the second qualifying round on Sunday.
A late withdrawal from the main draw meant Kotov had a chance to participate in the tournament as a lucky loser and as luck would also have it, he had a chance to extract revenge from Li. The two of them had been drawn together yet again to play in the first round just 24 hours later.
And he did exactly that.
Kotov went on to win 7-6 (4), 6-3 this time around, almost an identical scoreline to what he had endured a day earlier. In the qualifiers he had lost to Li 7-6 (5), 6-2.
He now faces Fokina and while his opponent is ranked more than 80 places ahead of him, he will also know the Spaniard isn’t too fond of grass.
Fokina v Kotov Prediction and Tip
Fokina can be expected to win despite his record on this surface. His opponent might put up a fight but that’s as close as the match might get.
Tips:
- Low Risk Tip: Fokina to win: 1/2
- Moderate Risk Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
