Their only previous match at the highest level came at the 2017 Wimbledon and that too in the qualifiers. Tsitsipas won that in two tie-breakers.

Tsitsipas Forced to Play in Third Grass Tournament

It’s a rare deal that a top five players on the men’s circuit has opted to feature in all the three grass court tune-up competitions in the lead-up to Wimbledon.

That’s how things have been, however, for Tsitsipas, who has just not been able to get himself going on this surface in 2023.

Having started off at the Stuttgart Open with a first round bye, Tsitsipas was sent packing by Richard Gasquet in a fighting three-setter in the second round. It was a bit of a surprise given Tsitsipas was a whopping 3/10 favourite there.

In Halle last week, Tsitsipas managed to get past Gregoire Barrere in his opener but even that took three sets and two tie-breakers at that. And then it was all over in the second round when Nicolas Jarry ousted him in straight sets.

Which is probably why Tsitsipas has decided to try and play a few matches here and get some much-needed practice under his belt leading into next Monday’s Wimbledon.

Hanfmann Routs Cachin

It did not take Hanfmann too long to make it to the second round as he routed the clay-court specialist and Argentine player Pedro Cachin in his opener.

Hanfmann won 6-2, 6-1 in 62 minutes to carve out a place in the round of 16 for himself for the second time in a row on grass. He had earlier defeated Louis Wessels in Halle before he fell to Andrey Rublev in the second round.

It wasn’t like Cachin didn’t have his chances with the Argentine getting four break-point opportunities in the match spread across three games. Hanfmann saved them all while himself getting the better of Cachin’s serve on five occasions.

It will be interesting to see how Hanfmann goes against Tsitsipas. On paper this looks like a one-sided result but Hanfmann could end up using his own performances on grass and his opponent’s recent debacles to his advantage.

Tsitsipas v Hanfmann Prediction and Tip

Tsitsipas hasn’t done too well but that might not be enough for Hanfmann to overcome him. Still, we expect a fighting showing.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 10/11
