That Lopez has fallen to 634th in the world is a result of the very little tennis that he plays these days and the even lesser number of matches that he wins.
The Spaniard had featured in five tournaments before this one in Mallorca and won just one match. At Mallorca he doubled that tally and in doing so, prevented an all-Aussie second round match.
In an opening round match that lasted just an hour and 21 minutes, Lopez defeated Purcell 6-3, 7-5 to enter the second round. He served up 11 aces and suffered just one break of serve which came in the very first game of the match.
From that point on, it was all one-way traffic with Lopez coming through for a rare second round meeting with Thompson.
While things might not get as easy against the in-form Aussie, Lopez does have his experience on grass to bank on.

Thompson Goes Past Gasquet
It’s been a good season on grass for Thompson and he showed yet again why he’s had it this good with an easy first round win here in Mallorca.
Playing the veteran Richard Gasquet in his first round, Thompson was on court for a touch over an hour and a half for his 6-3, 6-4 win. Such was Thompson’s dominance over his opponent, he did not face a single break-point even as he overcame Gasquet’s serve once in each of the two sets.
Slamming 13 aces, the Rosmalen Open runner-up won nearly 75% of all his service points as opposed to a mere 58% that Gasquet won.
Thompson had earlier made the second round at the Queen’s Club Championships as well. He will like to do at least one better to end his pre-Wimbledon grass court season on a high.
