It’s 1-1 at the moment; they last met in Nottingham back in 2015, where Maia won in three sets.

Maia Survives Bouzkova Test

Beatriz Haddad Maia has finally recorded a win on grass this season. After incurring a rather shocking loss to the then #157 Daria Snigur in the Nottingham Open first round earlier this month, the Brazilian found her rhythm in Eastbourne.

It wasn’t the easiest of the win, but that two-and-a-half hour match should give her some much-needed momentum. Playing Marie Bouzkova, Maia took the win 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(3), winning 73% of the points behind the first serve.

Last year, Beatriz won the titles in Nottingham and Birmingham to announce her intentions on the WTA Tour strongly. Granted that she lost in the Wimbledon first round thereafter, but that experience helped her crack the top 20 in the singles rankings.

She is now World No. 13 and has a record of 23-13. Most recently, she was a quarterfinalist in Rome and, later, a semifinalist in the French Open. The 27-year-old also enjoyed similar results on hard courts – notably in Abu Dhabi and Doha.

Martic Upsets Boulter

Petra Martic dashed British hopes by dismissing Katie Boulter 6-4, 7-5, in the first round.

The win comes as a reprieve for the Croat, who has lost 13 matches this year while winning only 16. Nonetheless, she is World No. 30 and has the experience & skills needed to stage a resurgence.

Martic is coming off an average clay spell. Except for her quarterfinal showing in Madrid, she was beaten early in Rome and the French Open thereafter – respectively, by Camila Osorio and Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Earlier in the season, Petra was the runner-up in Linz, which greatly helped her stay afloat in the top 50.

Maia v Martic Prediction and Tip

Maia has a solid grass pedigree and appears to be far more comfortable on the surface than Martic. That said, she was a bit sloppy of late, but if that funk is indeed in the past, then she should be able to move past Martic – albeit with some difficulty. Expect a cracking affair with many games.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Maia to win: 4/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 3/1
