Keys Edges Past Martincova

It turned out to be a tough contest, but Madison Keys would be happy to have begun her Wimbledon preparations on a winning note.

The world no. 25 overcame a slow start to prevail over world no. 113 Tereza Martincova in the first round contest of the Eastbourne Open on Monday.

Keys had conceded an early break in the first set and had fallen behind 0-3 and 2-5. She was on verge of losing the set as Martincova served for the set at 4-5, and held two set points, but the American saved both the set points and then went on to take the opening set in the tiebreak.

The second set was a close one as well, with Keys coming back from a break down and then getting a second break to lead 5-3. But she could not close out the contest as Martincova replied with an immediate break. However, Keys got a third break in the set in the next game to win the contest 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

A winner in 2014, Keys is playing in the main draw for the fourth time. She has a decent record on grass and two of her six WTA titles have come on the surface. Keys was also a quarterfinalist in Wimbledon in 2015.

This is her first grass court tournament of the season. She has a 17-8 record and her best includes quarterfinal finishes in Dubai and Charleston. Can she reach a third quarterfinal with a win on Wednesday?

She had made it to the main draw with wins over Dalma Galfi and Linda Fruhvirtova.

Wang is playing her third grass court tournament, but this is her first main draw win. She lost in the first round in Nottingham and the first round in Birmingham, after qualifying for the tournament.

Overall, Wang is 13-13 across levels this year, with her best being a round of 16 finish in Rome.

Keys v Wang Prediction and Tip

Keys is far more experienced than the 22-year-old and the American has even tasted success on grass over her career. This should be a one-sided contest with Keys advancing.

Tips:
