World no. 4 Jessica Pegula advanced to the second round in Eastbourne with a straight sets win over China’s Qinwen Zheng.

Playing her first match on grass this season, Pegula got a break each in the two sets and saved 8 of 8 break points to beat the world no. 24, 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 39 minutes.

A two-time champion on the tour, Pegula is looking to reach just her second quarterfinal on grass. She had earlier made it to the last eight in a grass court tournament in Berlin in 2021, but she did not make it to the semifinals then.

The win on Tuesday, improved the American to 30-10 in 2023. She was a finalist in Doha, a semifinalist in Dubai, Miami and Charleston and a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open and the Madrid Open.

World no. 81 Camila Osorio did not win a single match on grass last year, losing all four of her first round matches, but she has made a bright start this year, winning all three of the matches.

The first two wins came in the Eastbourne qualifiers. Osorio came back from a set down to beat Cristina Bucșa in a three-set first qualifying round and then she defeated Heather Watson in straight sets in the second qualifying round.

Osorio carried the qualifying form into the main draw, as she ousted Shelby Rogers 6-4, 6-4 in the first round on Monday.

Osorio saved 1 of 2 break points and converted 2 of 7 to reach round 2.

The 21-year-old Colombian is 19-9 across levels this year. She was a semifinalist in Lyon, which remains her best this season. She also made it to the round of 16 in Rome in what is her best performance in a big tournament this year.
