For a player ranked sixth in the world, it is a big surprise that Rune had entered this season on the back of having played three grass court matches and lost all of them. Those three had come in 2022 where Rune had featured in Halle, Eastbourne and at Wimbledon but was ousted in the first round at each one of them.
Which is why it was always going to be interesting to see how he does when he took to court at the Queen’s Club Championships this season. And Rune did well, at least well enough to not have to feature in another grass court competition – like Stefanos Tsitsipas has had to do – before Wimbledon.
He overcame Maxime Cressy, Ryan Peniston and Lorenzo Musetti to make it to the semifinal at Queen’s before going down to Alex de Minaur.
Rune will now hope to turn things around at this year’s Wimbledon as he hopes to go deeper and possibly into the second week of the competition.

Loffhagen on Grand Slam Debut
Having never been ranked better than 364th in the world, Loffhagen will make his Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon 2023 after being awarded a wildcard at his home competition.
He enters the tournament on the back of a couple of grass court appearances this season too. He made the quarterfinals of the Nottingham Challenger before he fell fighting in three sets against Luca Van Assche in the first round of the Eastbourne International.
What’s interesting to see is the transition that Loffhagen has had to make even to feature on the Challenger circuit, let alone the ATP match or this upcoming Wimbledon opener.
He was only as recently as February this season he was ranked 984th in the world and in May he was playing on the Futures circuit but with his first two career titles under his belt, it did look like he could take that step up. Against Rune things could get that much more difficult but Loffhagen will hope to come away a smarter tennis player from the experience.

Rune shouldn’t have a lot of problems here but he will do well to not take things for granted if he want to wrap things up in straight sets.
