Pegula Beats Osorio

Jessica Pegula had a tricky, unexpected match in round two in Eastbourne against Camila Osorio. It took her three sets to win the match 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. In the preceding match, she beat Qinwen Zheng 6-3, 6-4.

She is playing her first grass event of the year.

The current World No. 4 (#3 on the doubles tour) is coming off a pretty decent season. She is 31-10, with her highlights being the runner-up feat in Doha and numerous late-round appearances in big-ticket events like WTA Dubai, Miami Open, Charleston Open, and Madrid Open.

Pegula was a runner-up in Madrid, and Italian Open doubles and a semifinalist at the Roland Garros – all with Gauff.

As for her form on grass, this is one turf which she is yet to conquer. Wimbledon remains the only Slam where she has not reached a quarterfinal (yet) while on the surface, Jessica has never made it to a final – singles or doubles.

Last year, Pegula closed grass at 2-1 and the year before at 4-3.

Gauff in Superb Form

Coco Gauff is yet to lose a set in the competition this week. In the opener, she upset Bernarda Pera 6-3, 6-2 and followed it with a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Jodie Burrage. That match with the Brit was particularly intense as Gauff won the match in 60 minutes, dishing out 5 aces and winning 78% first service win points.

Now ranked #7 (#4 in doubles), the teenager last played in Berlin, where she fell to Ekaterina Alexandrova in round two.

Before that, however, Gauff was a quarterfinalist in the French Open, Indian Wells, and WTA Doha. A champion in ASB Classic and a semi-finalist in Dubai, Coco has had a spectacular year which now puts her at 26-10.

This is, of course, over and beyond her double exploits with Pegula.

On grass, Cori has made it to the round of 16 twice in Wimbledon.

Pegula v Gauff Prediction and Tip

The two players are friends and regular doubles partners with many big finals to their names. They are well familiar with each others’ games – which makes this a tough nut to crack for both of them.

For the fans, we are looking at an entertaining affair that can swing either way. Pegula starts as odds-on favourite.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Pegula to win: 3/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
