Francisco Cerundolo v Zhizhen Zhang Head to Head

They played two times so far and Zhang won both times. One of those matches came in 2021 at Wimbledon.

Cerundolo Looking Good on Grass

Francisco Cerundolo will have a chance to book a maiden semi-final on grass after putting together some really solid performances. The Argentine player showed some promise on the surface in the previous year scoring some wins. He’s continued with that this year earning two wins in three matches played.

His only loss this year came against Grigor Dimitrov who is himself known as a really solid grass player. The first match in Eastbourne saw him overcome Marc-Andrea Huesler in two simple sets. The Argentine has a really great forehand which does a lot of damage on this surface.

It’s quite flat and Cerundolo utilizes it really well. He’s also just very confident in his game and does really well to avoid spamming too many errors. Even when he’s missing a lot, he still manages to put the ball in more quite often so it negates the misses.

The record this year is pretty good at 25-16 with his career grass record at 5-5. He’s certainly the better player overall and to me hold a slight edge.

Zhang Finally Wins on Grass

Zhizhen Zhang should theoretically be a very good fit on the grass due to his immensely powerful serve and rather flat groundstrokes. The problem for him is the fact that he can just be up and down. His best is absolutely dangerous even to the best as he nearly ousted Casper Ruud at Roland Garros.

His general level is more hit-and-miss and most top players can find a way to beat him. He’s just too overconfident at times with the ball flying wild. This week in Eastbourne looks a bit better. He earned his first win on grass this year at the event beating Lorenzo Sonego in two sets and then followed that up with a win over Maxime Cressy.

Both were fair matches but the match against Cressy certainly showed some of his tendencies that get him beat. He’ll need to eliminate that and play a very strong match to beat Cerundolo who certainly won’t be intimated by him or his serve.

The serve will need to be really strong but even then it’s the rallies which will win or lose him the match. He’s 18-20 on the year so far.

Cerundolo v Zhang Prediction and Tip

While the odds don’t favour one over the other I do favour Cerundolo as I see him as the more stable and reliable player. I just feel he will win.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Cerundolo to win: 5/6
