Hanfmann Knocks Out Top Seed

Although Hanfmann began this tournament at his highest ever ranking, not having won a match at Wimbledon previously, he was not regarded as a clay court player. However, that perception may have begun to change.

In the first round he brushed aside the challenge of Pedro Cachin, conceding just three games to the Argentine. And then he achieved one of the best results of his career by knocking out the top seed, Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The Greek made the worst possible start to the match, dropping his serve in the opening game. Hanfmann was able to consolidate on that and claim the first set.

Tsitsipas saved three break points early in the second set, but it was the Greek who came up with the only break to force the match into a deciding set. However, it was the German who struck, breaking him once, and then again, to take his place in the quarter-final.

Lopez, Life in the Old Dog Yet

At 41, many expected this to be one of the last times that Lopez would play a competitive event, choosing the tournament that he organises to award himself a wildcard.

But he proved, despite his age, that the competitive fires still burn bright by beating the Australian Max Purcell, the reigning Wimbledon doubles champion, in straight sets in the first round.

Next up was another Australian, the world number 71, Jordan Thompson.

The first set was dominated by serve, with very few breaks opportunities on either side. Thompson held set point in the subsequent tie-break, but it was Lopez who went on to claim the set. In the second set, though, his energy levels dropped and Thompson ran away it, taking it for the loss of one game.

Those, though, who thought the Spaniard’s race was run were mistaken, and he came out for the third set re-energised, claiming an early break.

Thompson did save two match points on his own serve but the reprieve was fleeting, as Lopez served out to love next game.

Hanfmann v Lopez Prediction and Tip

Lopez will have the overwhelming backing of the crowd, hoping that he can pull out yet another win in what may be one of his last tournaments.

However, whether he can recover physically in time after playing three sets must be questioned, and, with Hanfmann buoyed by his win over Tsitsipas, the semi-final beckons for the German

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Hanfmann to win: 5/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 23.5 games in the match: 5/4
