Overall they have faced off five times including thrice at the highest level. Pegula leads 3-2 overall and 2-1 on the WTA circuit.

Pegula Made Eastbourne Quarterfinal

Pegula’s performance during the clay swing was par for the course but it did not end too well. She was ousted by Elise Mertens in the third round of the French Open but more vitally the American won just four games in that match.

She opted to feature in only one grass court competition following that and rather interestingly that was in the week just prior to Wimbledon. Again, Pegula’s performance in that tournament wasn’t the best she could have hoped for.

A couple of wins – over Qinwen Zheng and Camila Osorio – took her to the quarterfinal of that event but Pegula was then sent packing by her doubles partner Cori Gauff. The trouble again was that Pegula looked completely beaten and out of the contest.

Coming into the 2023 Wimbledon, Pegula has never made past the third round she had entered last season here. She is up against a challenging opponent but the bigger battles lie ahead given her recent early tournament departures.

Davis 0-2 on Grass This Year

Davis, whose best performance in this tournament came in 2019 when she also made the third round like Pegula, enters this season’s Wimbledon on the back of two wins and two losses on grass.

And even those victories did not come in the main draw of any tournaments.

After Caty McNally had sent Davis packing in the first round of the Birmingham Open, she fought back to overcome Diane Parry and Tereza Martincova in the qualifiers of the Eastbourne International. But her stay in that tournament was also short-lived when Jodie Burrage overcame Davis in the very first round.

Interestingly, Davis had shocked a few fans earlier this season when she went on to win the title in Hobart after starting out as a qualifier. She is doughty character but might come a cropper against a player of the quality of Pegula if the latter plays to potential.

Pegula v Davis Prediction and Tip

This seems like a straightforward win for Pegula and while Davis might put up a fight, things might not go into a third.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Pegula to win in straight sets: 4/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 19.5 games in the match: 10/11
