Kudermetova Hoping to Recover Quickly from Berlin

Kudermetova has had a solid season despite having fallen three spots from her career-best world number nine position. And that looked to be continuing on grass too, with the Russian featuring in two tournaments on the surface.

In the first at the Rosmalen Open, Kudermetova was at her blistering best as she made it to the final before going down to fellow countrywoman Ekaterina Alexandrova.

This was followed by a straight-set win over Qinwen Zheng in Berlin in her opener before she registered her first ever career-win over the world number two. It came in the second round of the Berlin Open against the in-form Aryna Sabalenka.

What is slightly worrying for Kudermetova is she was forced to withdraw from the tournament after that because of a left hip injury. She would hope to come into Wimbledon fully fit but that’s where one cannot be sure about her situation and make predicting this an exercise in difficulty.

Kanepi’s Opted Not to Play on Grass This Year

While most players opted to turn their attention to the grass court competitions of Europe on the completion of the French Open, Kanepi did not do anything of that sort. She featured in two ITF competitions in June, reaching the second round in Caserta and the quarterfinal at the Ystad.

And she now enters Wimbledon with a first round encounter against a player ranked 12th in the world, making it doubly difficult for her.

Kanepi has had her time under the London sun in the past though. In both, 2010 and 2013, the Estonian player had made the quarterfinals at Wimbledon – her joint-best Grand Slam showing – but in the 10 years since then, her performances here have fallen away.

In fact she has won only two matches between the 2014 and 2022 Wimbledon tournaments, as opposed to her quarterfinal appearance at the 2022 Australian Open, fourth round at the 2019 French Open and quarterfinal at the 2017 US Open.

She has the experience on her side but will that be enough for Kanepi?
