Garcia 4-2 on Grass This Year after Excellent Last Season

Garcia has dropped a few points during this year’s grass swing despite having made it to the quarterfinals of both the events she took part in this season.

The world number five had begun her ascent to the top of the rankings pile last season with a title win at the Bad Homburg Open but has not met with the same success this year.

Sure she has made it to the quarterfinals of the two tournaments she’s played but Garcia would have liked to do a lot better than to lose to Petra Kvitova (at Berlin) and Daria Kasatina (at Eastbourne) at that stage.

If the world number five wants to live up to her ranking and push on deeper, she will need to do a lot better as the pressure increases. And it’s not just about the quality of the opponent here but also the self-imposed pressure Garcia might be feeling as a fifth-ranked player.

Volynets’ Never Won a Grass Court Match

Volynets has always struggled to get going on grass, especially at the highest level, and it’s been no different this year.

Having entered the season on the back of zero wins on grass in the past, the American has done nothing this year to change that. What’s been rather bizarre is she has played in three grass court tournaments this year and lost four matches without winning one!

That happened after Volynets fell to Caty McNally in the first round of the Rosmalen Open and then failed to qualify for the Berlin Open as she lost in the first qualifying round itself.

And then at Bad Homburg, all she needed was to win one qualifier to make it to the main draw but did not. And then she still qualified as a lucky loser only to lose to Evginya Rodina 6-0, 6-4 in the opener.

With this kind of form and having to play a world number five does not augur a lot of confidence for Volynets’ chances.

Garcia v Volynets Prediction and Tip

This should be as straightforward as they come for Garcia with the Frenchwoman expected to come through in two.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Garcia to win in straight sets: 4/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 19.5 games in the match: 4/5
