Tiafoe Wins Stuttgart Title

Never before in his career had Tiafoe won more than one ATP title in a season. In fact, before coming into this tennis season, Tiafoe had had just one ATP title to his name.

This time around he has already won three including one at the United Cup early in the year where he dished out five successive singles victories to help USA lift the trophy.

Tiafoe then went on to win the Houston Open tournament on clay and was a semifinalist at the Indian Wells Masters earlier this year. More pertinently, however, Tiafoe will enter this year’s Wimbledon on the back of his maiden grass court title victory at the highest level.

He achieved this at the Stuttgart Open where he overcame Jan-Lennard Struff in a gritty final that went to a third set tie-breaker.

More recently, Tiafoe was sent packing in the second round of the Queen’s Club competition and lost both his Hurlingham Exhibition matches to Cameron Norrie and Novak Djokovic. Still, he looks to have found himself an extra gear that could help him come close to his previous best at Wimbledon – a fourth round showing.

Yibing on a Four-Match Losing Streak

This will be the season that Yibing will always remember given he won his maiden ATP title this year. However, it has also seen him struggle through periods of play where he has gone without a win.

He had won just three of the eight matches that followed his Dallas Open title victory and while he then made the quarterfinal of the Geneva Open, Yibing was forced to retire from that encounter.

Since coming back to competitive tennis after that, he has lost five of the six matches he’s played. Yibing’s only win came against an injured Nick Kyrgios but losses in the second round of the Stuttgart Open and opening rounds at Halle and Eastbourne have followed.

Yibing then featured at the Hurlingham exhibition competition in the days leading up to this opener here and went down to Quentin Halys in three sets. Things won’t get any easier for him against Tiafoe.

Tiafoe v Yibing Prediction and Tip

Tiafoe is a favourite and we expect him to come through but Yibing could put up a bit of a fight which leads to the match going into a fourth set.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Tiafoe to win in four or five sets: 1/1
