Coric 0-2 on Grass for the Season

Around 13 months ago, Coric had slumped to 279th on the ATP Rankings thanks to his layoff due to fitness-related issues. Fast-forward a year and a month ahead and Coric will enter Wimbledon ranked 14th in the world, just two spots away from his career-best ranking ever.

The Coric story has been an inspiring one for those returning from injuries and finding themselves struggling to get going. And it would hopefully be one for his own self too when he takes to court at Wimbledon, a tournament he hasn’t done well at before this.

The last time Coric won a round at Wimbledon was in 2015, following which he has had three opening round exits.

In fact his performances in the grass swing in the lead-up to the 2023 Wimbledon have been anything but spectacular too. At the Rosmalen Open, Coric lost his opener to Mackenzie McDonald before going down Alexander Bublik in straight sets at Halle.

Can he turn this grass form around this time?

Pella Stuns Giron at Mallorca

For starters Pella is a clay court specialist with his record on other surfaces not much to look at. He is one of those dirtballers who has made his career winning match after match on clay, and once also broke into the top 20.

Fitness issues forced him to miss the entirety of the 2022 season and on his return Pella has found himself out of the top 300 on the ATP charts.

However, he has managed to nibble away at a few wins here and there. Unsurprisingly, most of them had come on clay but Pella did make the second round at both, the Indian Wells Masters and the Miami Masters.

What makes it even better for the Argentine is he has done on grass this year what even his opponent didn’t manage – win a match. Pella overcame the loss of the first set against Marcos Giron before defeating the American at the Mallorca Open.

While Pella lost in the second round, he put up a brave front against Adrian Mannarino, even taking a set off him. This puts him in a good stead against Coric.

Coric v Pella Prediction and Tip

While Coric starts a favourite, this could get rather close and we could see Pella win a set even.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Pella to win a set: 2/5
