Musetti Enters Wimbledon at Career-Best Ranking

The 21-year-old Musetti is slowly creeping his way up the rankings charts and not too many have really been speaking about his rise. He is currently at his career-best ranking of 15th in the world with his performances in the grass court competitions in the lead-up to this year’s Wimbledon showing a similar kind of consistency as the rest of his season.

After having made the fourth round at the French Open, Musetti kick-started his grass court campaign at Stuttgart where he made the quarterfinal.

He followed that up with wins over Jan Choinski and Ben Shelton at the Queen’s competition to enter the last eight stage again. It took Holger Rune a fighting performance to go past him.

Musetti, who has never won a main draw round at Wimbledon before this, also featured in the Boodles exhibition where he overcame Roberto Bautista Agut. He looks set to win his first match on the hallowed turf of Wimbledon now.

Varillas Made Fourth Round at French Open

That Varillas prefers to play on clay is a foregone conclusion. A look at his overall career record exhibits not only the discrepancy in his win count on clay as opposed to the other surfaces, it also shows how little he plays outside of clay.

This year, for instance, he has featured in 15 tournaments and only two of them have come outside of clay – the Australian Open where he was forced to make it through the qualifiers and the Miami Open. He lost in the first round at both.

Varillas also did not play any grass court tournaments in the lead-up to Wimbledon, but even more interestingly, he has a sum total of two grass court matches under his belt in his career. Both came in the qualifiers at Wimbledon and he lost both times.

This time around he has made it to the main draw of the tournament thanks to his career-best ranking of 60th in the world and will hope he can put up some sort of a showing. That sounds difficult though.

Musetti v Varillas Prediction and Tip

This seems to be a bit of a mismatch with Musetti expected to register a rollicking win in three.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Musetti to win in straight sets: 4/6
