Popyrin Qualifies For Main Draw

Alexei Popyrin hasn’t had a spectacular grass season so far this year but he did win his latest match at the Boodles exhibition.  It improved his grass record to 3-4 this year and 17-19 for this career which is far but nothing special considering his strengths.

Despite being quite tall with a powerful serve and forehand, Popyrin has had his struggles on grass. He’s a fair player and had a really solid year so far with 26 wins in 46 matches, an improvement compared to last year. The win at the Boodles exhibition will be significant for him as he should enter the main draw a bit more confident.

Stricker is a really strong grass player who can certainly beat Popyrin on his best tennis which is why the Australian will need to bring his best if he hopes to make the second round. It starts with his serve, if he can’t create any advantage with his serve then he’ll be in trouble.

The forehand will need to be on point as well. He never played Stricker before so he’ll need to prep well for the match.

Stricker Makes Wimbledon Debut

Dominic Stricket is a rather talented Swiss player who never played in the Wimbledon main draw before. He played last year in the qualifiers losing in the second round. This year, Stricker put together a really strong run in the qualifiers winning three matches and all three wins were comfortable.

He only dropped a set in his final qualifying match but outside of that he certainly showed improvement compared to last year. He’s a lefty player with a strong serve and a great forehand which is why his best results so far came on indoor hard courts.

Grass is somewhat similar in that regard and victories over players like Hubert Hurkacz certainly prove that he’s a good fit on the surface. It’s been a good year so far with 25 wins and 10 losses. The record on grass is 5-2 and he’ll have a fair shot of getting number 6.

He’ll need his serve and his forehand as the match will be won in rallies. Who plays more stable from the baseline will ultimately win the match.

Popyrin v Stricker Prediction and Tip

This is a rather interesting matchup between two players of a similar level. The Swiss player is the one I think will win this one because I like his game overall a bit more. Expect at least four sets here and quite possibly five because they are very close.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Stricker to win the match: 1/1
