Carballes Baena Winless at Wimbledon

Wimbledon is Roberto Carballes Baena’s bogey slam. The Spaniard can’t hide the fact that he has never won a match in either qualifying or main draw in six visits to London.

The 30-year-old has lost in the first round of qualifying twice, and in his main draw appearances, he has lost in each of his first rounds, winning just one set in four matches.

To put it bluntly, Carballes Baena, just hasn’t mastered the technicalities of playing on grass. It’s the Spanaird’s weakest surface. He has a 5-13 lifetime record on grass, although he notched a major upset at this year’s Mallorca Championships when he defeated Ilya Ivashka in three sets.

Regardless of Tuesday’s result (even though expectations are almost non-existent in the Spaniard’s camp), it’s been a fine year for the man from Tenerife who collected the second ATP title of his career in Marrakech in April.

He ascended to inside the world’s top 50, but currently hovers just outside it, sitting at 53rd in the standings.

Arnaldi Beats Silva to Qualify

Matteo Arnaldi made amends for his failure at last year’s Wimbledon qualifying round. The Italian returned to Roehampton and won three tight rounds to reach the main draw for the first time.

Apparently, Arnaldi’s biggest test came in the first round when he defeated Chinese prodigy Shang Juncheng. Arnaldi was two points from defeat but eventually prevailed 3-6 7-6 7-5.

It was the only set he dropped in the past week, and since then, he notched a pair of hard-fought straight sets victories over Federico Gaio and Frederico Silva.

The 22-year-old is one of the fastest-improving players on the ATP Tour this season. With three Challenger titles to his name in 2023, Arnaldo broke the ATP’s top 100 in May.

He put together a sterling run in the Madrid Masters where he made the third round as a qualifier and picked up the biggest win of his career when he upset Casper Ruud.

Although he is very much at home on clay, Arnaldi’s biggest weapon is his power-packed forehand which proved a decisive shot in the qualifying rounds.

Carballes Baena v Arnaldi Prediction and Tip

Carballes Baena has a terrible record at Wimbledon and no surprise to see Arnaldi being heavily favored to win here. However, the qualifier could stutter on his way to victory.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Arnaldi to win: 4/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 3.5 sets in the match: 4/6
