Caroline Wozniacki v Monica Niculescu Head to Head
Wozniacki and Niculescu have met each other 10 times on the WTA Tour. The Dane has won all of their meetings, with the sole exception of an encounter in the Luxembourg Open in 2016, where she withdrew from the match.
The former World No. 1 is heading into this fixture with a 9-0 lead over the Romanian with their last meeting taking place in Doha in 2018.
Wozniacki Hoping for a Resurgence
The season so far hasn’t been up to Wozniacki’s expectations. She started as World No. 3 but owing to a poor display on the tour and health-related concerns, she eventually dropped out of the top 10.
In Auckland, she lost in the second round to Bianca Andreescu while in the Australian Open, she made it as far as the third round before succumbing to Maria Sharapova. After that, she missed the entire Middle East swing owing to viral illness and returned to the tour only in Indian Wells.
However, owing to a lack of momentum and consistency, the reigning China Open champion lost her opening game to Ekaterina Alexandrova. Wozniacki is slowly building her form and in Miami, she started strong with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
Niculescu’s Best Run of the Season
With the sole exception of the Shenzhen Open this year where she was a quarterfinalist, the Romanian never made it past the initial rounds in any of the subsequent tournaments. In Dubai and Indian Wells, she was defeated in the qualifiers itself.
However, she is now enjoying a resurgence of sorts in Miami. Once again, she started her campaign as a qualifier and made it to the main draw. In the opening game, she defeated Tamara Zidansek and followed it with an impressive, three-set victory over Garbine Muguruza.
That win marked one of the best performances by Niculescu in a long time. While she is more of a doubles player, her win over the Spaniard proves that she can win big on the singles circuit too.
Caroline Wozniacki v Monica Niculescu Predictions & Tips
On paper, Wozniacki will start as the favourite. She has the experience and more importantly, the psychological edge over Niculescu in the form of a 9-0 lead. At the same time, she has been quite rusty this season and hasn’t been in the best of form.
The Romanian, with her recent win over Muguruza, can capitalize on this and deliver yet another upset this tournament. All in all, this should be prove to be an interesting battle.
