Viktoria Hruncakova, World No. 127, started her campaign in London a few days before Mertens. As a qualifier, she beat Paula Ormaechea, Jaimee Fourlis, and Clara Tauson to reach the main draw.
This will be her third main-draw appearance in Wimbledon; in her last two attempts, she has never made it past the opening match.
Hruncakova is coming on the heels of an eventful grass campaign. The 25-year-old was a semifinalist in the Libema Open, where she beat Bianca Andreescu in round two. On the doubles side, she was the runner-up in the competition with Tereza Mihalikova. That was Viktoria’s second doubles final of the season, the other being the title from Ladies Linz with Natalia Dzalamidze.
Her record for the season is 22-18, with her other notable result coming in ITF Tallinn, where she was a runner-up.

Elise Mertens’ grass preparations may not have gone according to the plan, but she is still a player to beat in the draw this season.
She was slated to play in Den Bosch but withdrew from the tournament. Then in Eastbourne next, she retired in the opening match against Karolina Pliskova, trailing 7-6(3), 3-6, 3-0.
All things considered, Mertens has a rich history at SW19. On the singles side, she has reached the round-of-16 twice while, as a doubles player, she was the winner here in 2021 and a runner-up in 2022 – respectively, with Su-Wei Hsieh and Shuai Zhang.
As for her season so far, Elise most recently won the Italian Open doubles.
On the singles tour, she was a semifinalist in Monterrey and reached the mid-rounds in big-ticket events like the Miami Open, Madrid Open, and French Open.

Mertens, as the current #28, should be confident of her prospects in this game. That said, Hruncakova has a decent grass campaign and will eye an upset. Expect an entertaining match where the Belgian may very well be tested.
