Karatsev Hoping for Some Wins
Aslan Karatsev never pretended to be a very good grass player as he doesn’t have too much experience on the surface on top of just not being a great fit. He has a decent serve and very flat shots however his style hasn’t produced any noticeable results so far on the surface.
He won only 5 of 12 matches played so far in his career though two of those came this year. Neither of those wins were spectacular as they came over clay players but he’s a player you need to be careful with as he can be very streaky and play super tough tennis.
He proved it in Madrid this year and at the Australian Open much earlier in his career. The overall season has been quite good with 21 wins in 34 matches, far better than the level he produced last year. That in itself should put any of his opponents on alert.
He’s facing a player without much experience but one who is likely to stay more patient in rallies and that’s the danger for him.

Van Assche Looking Good on Grass
Luca van Assche hasn’t played on grass before this year but he proved rather solid overall winning four matches so far. There were some solid wins in there for the young French player who has a lot of patience in his game.
You need to have patience on grass because the surface is fast and plays quickly but there is a lot of things to think about while playing. Rushing never gets you anyway and being tactical is beneficial. That’s how Van Assche approaches his tennis.
That should help him against Karatsev generally as the Russian is prone to rushing. Another thing that will matter is the length of the match.
Karatsev can play a long match but Van Assche might run into some trouble if the match goes to four or five sets. The serve will also be crucial for him as he can serve well but it’s not his main weapon.
Karatsev v Van Assche Prediction and Tip
This is a very hard one to predict. Karatsev is favoured and likely the better player at his peak right now but the youngster can get it done. I think I’m going to side with the younger player.
Tips:
- Moderate Risk Tip: Van Assche handicap sets +1,5: 4/6
