Second Coming of Strycova

It’s been 22 months since Barbora Strycova announced her retirement from professional tennis. After giving birth to her son Vincent over a year ago, Strycova has performed a dramatic U-turn from her initial decision and returned to the rigors of competition in April.

Strycova, now 37, is a former doubles No. 1 and a former Wimbledon doubles champion. She enters the 2023 Championships with a protected ranking where she will face a player whom she beat to pick up her first win since her comeback.

Strycova won her duel against Maryna Zanevska at the Italian Open in May, doing so in three sets. After getting herself in line with the vibes and energy of competition and packed crowds, the Czech is looking to prove a point at SW19.

As fate would have it, she has drawn Zanevska again in her first grand slam match since her maternity absence, after electing not to play the French Open.

Strycova has played only four matches on grass coming to Wimbledon, winning once and losing the other three.

Zanevska Winless Since April

Maryna Zanevska comes to Wimbledon with a shoddy record of one WTA main draw win since mid-February. Her only win came at the end of April when she beat Sofia Kenin in the first round of the Madrid Open.

No wonder she is instilled as the underdog at 5/4 in spite of playing an opponent who only recently returned from retirement.

What even borders on the indescribable, was her recent main draw appearance in Bad Homburg where she qualified for the event at lost to 36-year-old Italian veteran Sara Errani on grass.

It’s been a worrying trend of poor form from the Belgian who only made the main draw at this year’s Wimbledon courtesy of her top 100 ranking.

Zanevska owns five main draw wins at Tour level this season, and in her only two appearances at Wimbledon, she lost in the first round. The odds are certainly stacked against the 29-year-old again on Monday.

Strycova v Zanevska Prediction and Tip

It doesn’t paint a good picture that Zanevska’s most recent defeat came against Sara Errani on grass. Strycova clearly had one eye for Wimbledon since she announced her return, and we expect the Czech veteran to add to the agony for the Belgian.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Strycova to win: 8/13
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
