World no. 34 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina doesn’t like playing on grass courts and an 8-11 career record across levels on the surface is a reflection of that.
This year, he played in two tour level tournaments on grass and he lost in the first round in both of them. First he suffered a defeat to Jiri Lehecka at the Queen’s Club and then he lost to Pavel Kotov in Mallorca.
Davidovich Fokina is 19-16 this season and has featured in five quarterfinals.
The 24-year-old Spaniard is making his third Wimbledon appearance. He lost in the first round on his debut two years ago, while he could only reach the round 2 last year.

Arthur Fils has made quite an impression this year. The 19-year-old Frenchman won his first ATP title on clay in Lyon, by beating Francisco Cerundolo in the final.
Fils also reached his first two Challenger finals this year, finishing runner-up in Quimper but winning the title in Oeiras.
He had a 0-1 career record at the tour level at the start of the tournament, but head into his first Wimbledon with a 10-5 season record behind him.
Fils was also a semifinalist in Montpellier and Marseille this season.
On grass, he is yet to be tested. He won both his qualifying rounds in ‘s-Hertogenbosch but lost in the first round to Adrian Mannarino. He then won both the qualifiers in Queen’s Club, but did not feature in the main draw.

Davidovich Fokina has played a lot more Grand Slam matches than Fils and that will give him an advantage in the first round. That said, Fils is a fantastic player and he will give a tough fight and try to keep the Spaniard winless on grass. This could go the distance with the Spaniard edging through.
