Kudermetova Scores Fighting Win over Kanepi

Kudermetova was a 1/10 favourite coming into her opening round match against Kanepi but as we had discussed in our preview of that match there was always going to be a question-mark over her fitness.

Well, she did come through in straight sets as we had thought but Kudermetova did look like she was playing well within herself.

What that meant is that Kanepi managed to push the encounter to an hour and 44 minutes before Kudermetova finally won 7-6 (4), 6-4 with just a single break of serve differentiating the two players.

The Russian did not face a single break-point in the first set and frittered away the only chance that she had before clinching the opening set in a tie-breaker. She then wasted four more chances of getting past Kanepi’s serve in the second set, saved three break-points on her own serve in the ninth game before laying low her opponent in the 10th game.

It was Kudermetova’s first break of the match that had come in the final game of the encounter.

Vondrousova Tames Stearns

That Vondrousova managed to keep Peyton Stearns at bay would come as a huge relief for the former French Open finalist. While she was a 1/4 favourite starting out, Vondrousova would have known how well Stearns had gone about her business all season making it an intriguing clash.

In the end, Vondrousova did not spend a lot of time on court and despite a late fightback from Stearns she won 6-2, 7-5 in an hour and 29 minutes.

A couple of breaks of serves in the first three games of the match helped Vondrousova storm through the opening set and it looked like she was on her way to winning it with ease when she went 4-2 ahead in the second.

Stearns came back into the reckoning as Vondrousova served for the match, breaking her in the 10th game but the Czech player broke right back before sealing the deal in the next.

Vondrousova could well make things difficult for Kudermetova in this second round match given her recent form.

Kudermetova v Vondrousova Prediction and Tip

There’s not much to choose between the two we think and while Kudermetova is 8/11 to start off this could go either way.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
