Djokovic Overcomes Rain, Third Set Fightback in Opener

Djokovic was on court for two hours and 14 minutes for his opening round win that could have been a more routine one but for a bit of a fight from Pedro Cachin in the final.

Rain played its part too with the weather holding Djokovic’s first round match up but that did not change the course of the encounter as the Serb carved out a 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over the world number 68.

In hunt for his eighth Wimbledon title, Djokovic was down a break early in the first set but that was the only time he would get broken in the entire match. He broke Cachin right back in the fourth game before breaking him again in the eighth.

The world number two would then break Cachin in the first and ninth game of the second set to garner a two-set lead. In the third, Cachin served a tad better, saving break-points in two separate games but came a cropper in the tie-breaker that followed.

Djokovic should have no major worries come the second round either against a player ranked 70th in the world.

Thompson Makes a Comeback Win against Nakashima

Thompson’s form on grass in the lead-up to this year’s Wimbledon tournament has been exemplary. He made the semifinal of the Surbiton Challenger, was a losing finalist at the Rosmalen Open and also made the second round at both, Queen’s and Mallorca Open.

Coming into Wimbledon 2023 though, he was up against the tough challenge of Brandon Nakashima in the first round and even the bookmakers had them both pegged at 9/10 for a win.

For about an hour and 10 minutes in the encounter, Thompson looked like he had kept his form away. Five breaks of serves against him meant he was two sets down in a jiffy and even when he earned himself a break in the fifth game of the third, it did not look like his confidence was fully back.

He wrapped up the third set, lost the only break-point of the fourth set but then raced away with it in the tie-breaker.

The tide turned completely in the sixth game of the fifth set where he broke Nakashima in the sixth game and then served it out soon after to enter round two.

This will be his third successive appearance in the second round here but the chances of him emulating his career-best third round here look bleak.

Djokovic v Thompson Prediction and Tip

Djokovic shouldn’t have a lot of trouble and other than that odd set which could go a tie-breaker this looks like a fairly straightforward win for the Serb.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 30.5 games in the match: 5/6
