Kasatkina Continues Good Form on Grass

A quarterfinalist in 2018, Daria Kasatkina made a good start at this year’s edition, beating the United States’ Caroline Doelhide in straight sets on Monday.

Kastakina needed just 69 minutes to see off the world no. 100, 6-1, 6-4.

The Russian struck 15 fewer winners than Dolehide’s 24 but she also made 27 fewer unforced errors than her opponent’s 40.

Kasatkina broke the American thrice in the first set, while she saved 7 of 7 break points. In the second, the world no. 10 was broken in the very first game, but she bounced back to win the last four games in a row and seal a victory.

Kasatkina, who improved her season record to 20-15 following the win, is into the second round at the grass court major for the fifth time in her career. She is 5-2 on grass this season and was a finalist in Eastbourne last week.

Burrage Knocks Out McNally

Facing Kasatkina will be world no. 108 Joddie Burrage, who has been playing some quality tennis on grass this year.

And carrying that form to Wimbledon, the Briton defeated Caty McNally in the first round on Monday to register her first ever win at her home slam.

Burrage was knocked out in the first round of Wimbledon in 2021 and 2022. But this time she was on top of her game from the start as she recorded a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

Burrage outplayed McNally in the first set by breaking her thrice. The American however went up a break in the second set to lead 2-3, but the 24-year-old Burrage fought back to win the 64-minute contest.

Burrage had reached a maiden WTA final in Nottingham last month, but finished runner-up to fellow Briton Katie Boulter. She had also reached the round of 16 in Eastbourne, after making the main draw as a lucky loser.

She is expected to give a tough fight to Kasatkina.
