Wawrinka Demolishes Ruusuvuori
With no grass court matches under his belt in the lead-up to this year’s Wimbledon, Wawrinka was never expected to enter his first round match against Emil Ruusuvuori as a favourite. But all it took was two hours and 20 minutes for Wawrinka to make it through to the second round of this year’s competition.
Wawrinka won 7-5, 7-5, 6-4 to seal his first win at Wimbledon since 2019 as he left his opponent flummoxed with a very controlled and disciplined play.
He did face 11 break-points but Wawrinka saved all but two of them while overcoming his opponent’s serve five times in the process.
What was interesting to note was while Wawrinka hit just 18 winners and had 26 unforced errors going against him, his opponent had corresponding figures of 31 and 40 respectively. Not much there between the two players but Wawrinka’s experience to crank it up when it mattered made all the difference.
The Swiss player last made the third round at this tournament in 2015 and now stands on the brink of doing that again as he faces a clay-courter in Etcheverry.

For us there wasn’t much to choose between Etcheverry and Bernabe Zapata Miralles, two players who love their time on clay. Four hours and 40 minutes is the time it took to separate the two of them in their first round match here with Etcheverry coming through in the 12th game of the fifth set.
Etcheverry came back from two sets down against Zapata Miralles to seal his second round berth as he defended against a whopping 21 break-points he faced in the entire match. He was broken four times but got the better of his opponent’s serve on six occasions to win 6-7 (5), 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5.
The sixth of those break of serves came in the 11th game of the final set, following which Etcheverry served it out in the next game to win his first ever match at Wimbledon.
Earlier this year, Etcheverry’s only match on grass had come at the Eastbourne International where he went down to JJ Wolf in the first round. The manner in which he played there gives an impression that the Argentine is still a while away from excelling on this surface.
