Moutet Eases Past Gasquet

After being out of action because of injury, Moutet looks to be easing his way back into the reckoning rather well. Sure he isn’t quite a favourite to make the second week at this tournament but the way he got past the experience of Richard Gasquet in the opener, Moutet’s confidence would have risen just that little bit.

Moutet was on court for nearly two and a half hours but did not allow Gasquet to take control at any time, winning in straight sets in the end.

Broken three times in the match, Moutet overcame his opponent’s serve a whopping six times as he clinched the second round berth 6-3, 7-5, 7-5.

The only time Gasquet looked like he had a bit of a chance came in the third set when he grabbed a 4-2 lead but once Moutet had decoded a way to break back in the seventh game, there was no looking back for the world number 71.

Can he now push on to make it to the third round at Wimbledon for the first time in his career?

Safiullin in a Five-Set Shock Win over Bautista-Agut

The match was expected to go Bautista-Agut’s way with the Spaniard starting off a 3/10 favourite in the encounter. Safiullin lost the first set with ease too and it looked like things were heading to the script.

When Safiullin dropped his serve in the seventh game again, the narrative looked to be going the right way and while he did break back and took the set into a tie-breaker, he fell 4-6 behind there.

Bautista-Agut failed to take advantage of that though and very soon Safiullin had stunned the crowd by winning the tie-breaker. A third set tie-breaker followed and this time around Bautista-Agut went two sets to one ahead with the advantage restored again.

A break of serve in each of the next two sets got Safiullin the advantage but more vitally he refused to let go, holding on to his serve like it was the precious thing on the planet.

More than four hours after the match started, Safiullin had registered a five-set win, his first ever at Wimbledon, to seal his second round place next to Moutet. Can he put up a similar fight?

Safiullin v Moutet Prediction and Tip

After a four-hour battle like that, Safiullin will hope he can come up with something as good but playing on successive days could play a part here. Expecting Moutet to ease his way past his Russian opponent.

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Moutet to win: 1/1
