Norrie Recovers from Second Set Stumble against Machac

A quarterfinalist at the Queen’s Club competition, Norrie had then won a couple of matches on grass at the Hurlingham Exhibition coming into Wimbledon 2023. As a result, the British number one was expected to start off a heavy favourite against Tomas Machac in his opener.

Some power hitting in the first set might have been a bit of a warning for what was to come but Norrie would have considered himself to be in rhythm when he scooped it up in 34 minutes with two breaks of serves.

It didn’t remain that easy for Norrie though.

An early break of serve for Machac brought him back into the contest and while Norrie recovered to break back, a second break of serve was enough for Machac to level the match.

The fightback didn’t last for long though. Norrie broke Machac twice to claim the third and then shrugged off an early break of serve in the fourth to claim his second round berth 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in two hours and 33 minutes.

Norrie will hope to make his own job a lot easier come the next match.

Eubanks Overcomes Monteiro After a Slow Start

Having won his maiden ATP title in the week leading up to the start of this year’s Wimbledon, Eubanks had entered his first round match here against Thiago Monteiro as a 1/4 favourite.

Nearly an hour into that opener, Eubanks did not look like he was playing like a favourite though.

Having lost the first set, Eubanks had been unable to break the Monteiro serve in the second set and it looked like a tie-breaker was looming.

Eubanks finally found a way through in the 12th game of the set as Monteiro served to stay in the set, breaking him off the first opportunity that the American got. And he repeated the same in the third set, getting past his opponent’s serve as he served at 5-6 down.

With the match turned around now, Eubanks broke Monteiro once more – in the sixth game of the fourth – before wrapping things up nicely and carving a victory in two hours and 49 minutes. 28 aces and 66 winners punctuated his sixth successive win on tour, making him one of the players to watch out.

Norrie v Eubanks Prediction and Tip

While Norrie is a favourite here, counting Eubanks out of this one would be foolhardy. In fact a Eubanks win could be a risky, but fulfilling punt here.

Tips:

  • High Risk Tip: Eubanks to win: 13/5
