Vekic Starts Well
Donna Vekic was truly impressive in her opening Wimbledon match against the Chinese veteran Shuai Zhang. In just an hour and 14 minutes, the 20th seed bagged the win 6-2, 6-3 – hitting 23 winners while committing only 13 unforced errors.
The Croat is having a resurgence of late. She is now ranked World No. 21 – just two places shy of her career-best ranking of #19.
Her record now stands at a respectable 25 wins to 10 losses. Vekic also won a title in the Monterrey Open (beating Caroline Garcia in the final) while most recently, she was the runner-up in WTA Berlin. In the latter, Donna was truly impressive as she dismissed the likes of Elena Rybakina and Maria Sakkari.
Earlier in the season, the 27-year-old also made it to the quarterfinal in the Australian Open and WTA Linz.

Stephens Impresses in the Opener
Sloane Stephens enjoyed a confident start this week as she beat Rebecca Peterson 6-2, 6-3 in just 63 minutes.
A quarterfinalist at SW19 in 2013, the American has since just made it as far as round three in London.
Stephens has seen a fair bit of struggles with form and consistency over the last 18 months. She has improved her play this season; case in point, she closed 2022 at 18-17, while in 2023, she is already at 18-12.
To her credit, Sloane won the Saint-Malo Challenger and later reached the semifinal in Rabat and round four at the French Open.
A former World No. 3 who is now ranked #39, Stephens has two Grand Slam finals to her name and a litany of top-10 wins.
Vekic v Stephens Prediction and Tip
If this were a match on hard courts, I’d say it would be an even affair. But on grass, Vekic has the advantage owing to her recent form.
Stephens is playing on the surface without any professional warm-up per se, so she may be out of her comfort zone when she takes on someone who is in a better rhythm than her on the grass.
Tips:
- Low-Risk Tip: Vekic to win in straight sets: 1/2
- Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
