Beatriz Haddad Maia was slow off the blocks but she soon found her rhythm and bounced back from a set down to beat Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva in a three-set first round contest.
The world no. 13 struck 34 winners, saved half of four break points she faced and converted 5 of 11 to win the two hour and 11 minute contest 3-6, 6-0, 6-4.
With the win, the Brazilian improved her season record to 24-14 this year. The 27-year-old two-time tour level champion did not reach a final this year but she was a semifinalist at the French Open and the Abu Dhabi Open and was a quarterfinalist four times.
She is a fantastic player on grass and won two titles on the surface last year. But while she was knocked out at Wimbledon in the first round, she has made it to the second round at SW19 for the third time. She is yet to go beyond the round of 64 though but has a great chance of doing that this year.

World no. 133 Jaqueline Cristian made an excellent Wimbledon debut as she knocked out world no. 47 Lucia Bronzetti in straight sets in the first round.
While the Romanian struck seven aces and 18 winners in the contest, she saved 7 of 10 break points and converted 5 of 8 to win 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 23 minutes.
With the win, Cristian improved her tour-level record to 2-5 in 2023. But while she has struggled at the top level, she has been very good in lower level tournaments and has won as many three ITF titles this year, in addition to reaching three ITF semifinals.
It is only the second time that Cristian is into the second round of a major. She had lost in the round of 64 at the Australian open last year. Can she make it to the third round this year?
