Eastbourne Winner Cerundulo Beats Portuguese

Winning Eastbourne last week would have given Cerundulo renewed confidence about his ability to compete on grass, and he has now gone beyond the first round of Wimbledon for the first time.

Not that it was all plain sailing at first against Nuno Borges of Portugal, the world number 69. The Argentine began well enough, breaking Borges in the opening game of the match.

But serving for the set, Cerundulo faltered, was broken and then again, allowing Borges to steal the set. That served as a wake-up call for Cerundulo, who broke his opponent twice in the second set to level the match.

One break of serve proved enough for him to take the third set as well, with both men missing other break point opportunities. An early break then put the Argentine in the driving seat in the fourth set.

Although he missed other break point opportunities, it did not matter in the end, as Borges finally succumbed.

First Wimbledon Win for Lehecka

Like Cerundulo, Lehecka’s only previous appearance in the main draw at Wimbledon had ended in a first round defeat. But he made sure that there would be no repeat this time with a convincing display against the Austrian wildcard, Sebastian Ofner, ranked 72nd in the world.

In a first set dominated by serve, one break was enough for Lehecka to  grab the advantage.

The second set was almost a carbon copy of the first, the only difference being that Ofner did manage to create a break back point, although he could not convert it. The first game of the third set, saw the Austrian save five break points, before Lehecka made the sixth one count.

The match was as good as over then, because the Czech kept Ofner at arm’s length until the finishing line had been reached.

Cerundulo v Lehecka Prediction and Tip

Neither man has any history at Wimbledon, but both impressed in different ways in their first round victories.

However, with that Eastbourne win in his locker, Cerundulo suggests that he has the capability to go deep into this tournament, and should be considered the favourite.

It could be a close match, though.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Cerundulo to win: 7/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 35.5 games in the match: 21/20
