Shelton Taken to Five by Daniel

Things looked to be headed Shelton’s way as he grabbed a two sets to love lead against Taro Daniel on his Wimbledon main draw debut.

But a sudden turnaround brought about by Daniel improving on his second serve meant that Shelton was unable to break through his opponent’s serve in successive sets. A sense of frustration probably built up Shelton’s game and he lost his own serve on two occasions – once apiece in the third and the fourth set.

Shelton, however, came back in the final set with a much better hold on his own serve – he faced no break-points in the set – while overcoming Daniel’s serve in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead.

He would soon serve it out to clinch his second round berth, winning 6-4, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4 in three hours and eight minutes, his second career victory on grass.

Can he pull out successive victories now?

Djere Defeats Cressy in Four Tie-Breakers

It took Djere three hours and 41 minutes and four sets to come through in his first round match against Maxime Cressy and register his third win on grass for the season.

Djere, whose previous best for a season was one grass court match win, came back from a set down to clinch the next three – all of which went to tie-breakers.

An early trade of breaks of serves took the two players to an opening set tie-breaker in which Cressy missed three set-points before taking the lead off his fourth. The same script repeated in the second set when there were early breaks leading to a tie-breaker but this time around Djere was off to a flier in it and soon levelled the match.

Such was the close nature of the match there were no break-points on offer in the third set. The following tie-breaker saw Cressy miss out on one set-point, Djere lose two but the Serb converted his third and grabbed the lead.

Cressy missed another set-point in the fourth set tie-breaker while Djere had a match-point before he converted his second such opportunity to grab the second round berth.

Can Djere actually make it four wins on grass this year?
