Sebastian Korda had, probably in a moment of brain-fade or in jest, called himself a Wimbledon favourite this year. Unfortunately for him, that prediction looks to have come back to haunt him as he fell away in the first round of the competition here.
And while early losses aren’t unusual, what makes this so different and difficult to swallow for the American is it came at the hands of a player who is currently ranked 528th in the world.
Vesely had come into this tournament on the back of five successive defeats including three on the Challenger circuit and not too many had given him a chance to win a set, let alone the match. He was 6/1 odds to cause an upset.
Upset is what he caused when a touch over three hours later, he had ousted the world number 25, 7-6 (7), 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. In doing so Vesely what a fighter he is, having saved three set-points in the opening set, the result of which could have turned the match against him too.
Can he now make it to the third round having done exactly that last year too?

O’Connell Comes Through against Medjedovic
Taking on Hamad Medjedovic in his opener, Australia’s O’Connell was a 3/5 favourite but would have come into the match knowing there are no guarantees against a player who is on a rise.
Sure, Medjedovic is ranked 156th in the world but those numbers are fast changing and for the better. And O’Connell felt a bit of that in a match that went on for over three hours and required him four sets to come through.
O’Connell overcame his Serbian opponent 7-5, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to reach the second round at Wimbledon for the first time in his career.
Following on from his quarterfinal appearance at the Stuttgart Open, O’Connell shrugged off three breaks of serves and took advantage of the 10 break-points he had, breaking his opponent on five occasions.
He will hope to continue in a similar vein against a player who has barely won anything in a while before this tournament.
