Maia Finding Her Way

World No. 13 Beatriz Haddad Maia has had a shaky start to her Wimbledon 2023. She found herself in two three-set matches against Yulia Putintseva and Jaqueline Cristian.

The 27-year-old did not seem that comfortable fully; she has already made 67 unforced errors this week. This may only mean more trouble when she takes on Cirstea.

Having won two grass titles last year, Maia’s present campaign on the traditional courts did not go well. In Nottingham, she lost to Daria Snigur, while in Eastbourne, she retired in the second round mid-game against Petra Martic.

Nevertheless, Beatriz has had a pretty good year overall. She was a semifinalist at the Roland Garros and played in the QF in Madrid and Stuttgart. She is 25-14 and armed with many wins over top-10 players.

Cirstea Reaches R3 Again

Sorana Cirstea, who is now competing in her 14th Major in London, finds herself playing in round three for the fourth time. She has never made it past this stage – so it is a personal test for her to do better.

Her chances are not all bad. In round two, she carved an upset by knocking Jelena Ostapenko 4-6, 7-6(8), 6-4 in two and a half hours. The 33-year-old had to survive a barrage of 48 winners from the Latvian, but she sailed through on her 46 unforced mistakes (compared to Cirstea’s 25).

In the preceding match, she knocked out the veteran German Tatjana Maria in three sets.

It’s another top-50 season for Sorana so far; she is 23-14 and has a title from the Reus Challenger. Hest best results came in the Sunshine Doubles when she played in the closing rounds.
