World no. 7 Andrey Rublev has matched his previous best at Wimbledon by reaching the round of 16 for the second time.

The Russian, who was beaten in the fourth round in 2021, is one step away from reaching his first quarterfinal at the grass-court major. He has been a Grand Slam quarterfinalist on seven occasions, including at the Australian Open this year, but has not gone beyond that stage.

He will be eager to make a deep run this time around but he plays his fourth round match against a player, who was also the last player to beat him this season. Rublev went down to Bublik in the Hale Open final on June 25. He has not lost a match since then and that includes two exhibition tournament wins and three wins at Wimbledon.

Rublev began his Wimbledon campaign with a 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 win over Max Purcell in the first round. He then defeated compatriot Aslan Karatsev 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in the second round.

On Friday, he edged out David Goffin 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 in a three hour and two minutes contest. Rublev struck 51 winners, including 14 aces in the match. He won 78% points on his first serve, saved 5 of 8 break points and converted 6 of 15 to knock out the world no. 123.

Bublik Extends Win Streak to 8 Matches

Alexander Bublik won his eighth consecutive match as he knocked out Germany’s Maximilian Marterer in straight sets in the third round on Friday.

The 23rd seed Kazakh was not broken in the match as he saved all four of the break points that he faced. In contrast, he held nine break points and capitalised on four of them to win the match 6-4, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) in an hour and 52 minutes.

Bublik struck 10 aces, won 89% points on his first serve and struck 39 winners to brush aside the world no. 170.

The Kazakh had also won his second round match in straight sets, beating American J.J. Wolf 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0.

He however dropped a set in the first round against Mackenzie McDonald, but rebounded after losing the first set to win the match 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. He had struck 24 aces in that match.

This is the first time that Bublik has reached the round of 16 in a Grand Slam. Can he beat Rublev for the second time this year and advance to his first major quarterfinal?

Rublev v Bublik Prediction and Tip

This is expected to be a very close contest. It could go either way. While Rublev has a much better record in Grand Slams than Bublik, the latter is a touch better player on grass. So there is little to choose between the two and this may go the distance with Rublev getting his Halle Open revenge.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Rublev to win: 4/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 40.5 games in the match: 5/6
