Sinner Drops First Set At The Championships

Jannik Sinner dropped a set at this year’s Championships but quickly rediscovered his mojo to breeze past French big server Quentin Halys.

Halys matched Sinner’s pure power from the back of the court. He staved off a break point in the third game of the first set, and moved to break Sinner’s serve in the next game to take a 3-1 lead.

Sinner was seeing the balls fly past him, as Halys fired five aces and lost just three points behind his first serve in a dominant opening set.

But Sinner figured the Frenchman’s skillset. He fed on the second serve, as he created three break points in the second set and took two of them. He won 57% return points on Halys’ second serve to win the second set 6-2.

In the third set, Sinner raced to a 40-0 lead on the Frenchman’s serve in the sixth game, and after spurning two chances, he was successful in his third try. Sinner was not handing Halys any openings on his own serve and soon took a two-sets-to-one lead.

In the fourth set, Halys’ fitness was put to the test. The Frenchman had played an extended schedule at the Championships in the last three days due to rain, and it was only natural that his biggest weapons would misfire. Once again, his serve let him down, averaging 65% first-serve points won, and 40% behind his second delivery. Sinner recovered from going an early break down to break Halys twice.

Sinner’s place in the second week never looked in doubt, and he’s now almost assured to return to the quarterfinal for the second year in a row, in a matchup against Colombian clay-courter Daniel Elahi Galan, with Sinner starting at astronomical 1/10 pre-match favorite.

Galan Breaks New Ground

Daniel Elahi Galan will make a surprise appearance in the fourth round of a Slam.

The Colombian clay-court specialist outlasted Mikael Ymer in a five-set marathon. Galan spent four hours and 14 minutes to emerge victorious 6-2 6-7 7-6 3-6 6-1 on Court 17.

Both players combined for a total of 96 winners in the match, and a high of 130 unforced errors. Galan’s ability to mix it up proved critical against a baseliner like Ymer who was mostly pinned on the back of the court.

The Colombian made 50 attempts to head to the net and was rewarded on 35 occasions. And on the balance of play, he deserved to win the match, winning 51% of total points. After highly engaging and entertaining sets, the fifth was a complete letdown. Ymer’s serve failed him badly, as he was broken twice.

Galan, who lost in the third round stage at last year’s Wimbledon to Brandon Nakashima, has now achieved his best result at Grand Slam level.

Sinner v Galan Prediction and Tip

Elahi Galan has punched well above his weight, but the odds pretty much sum up the probable outcome here. Sinner to win at a canter is the only choice we expect from this fourth-round match.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Sinner to win: 1/10
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Sinner to win in straight sets: 8/15
