Alcaraz Passes Jarry Test

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz was tested for the first time in this year’s Wimbledon, but the 20-year-old successfully passed the test, edging out Chile’s Nicolas Jarry on Saturday to move into the fourth round for the second time in his career.

Last year, the Spaniard was beaten in the round of 16 by Jannik Sinner, but this year he is in sensational form on grass and looks well placed to go deep. Alcaraz came into the tournament after capturing his 11th career title and his first on grass at Queen’s. The three wins at Wimbledon so far means he is now 8-0 on the surface this year.

Alcaraz had begun his Wimbledon campaign with a 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 win over Jeremy Chardy in the first round and then defeated Alexandre Müller 6-4, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 in round 2.

On Saturday, the Spaniard got the solitary break of the first set to take a one-set-to-love lead. But Jarry came back in the second set. Both players broke each other once in the second set and then Jarry saved a set point in the tiebreak, before converting a set point and tying the match at one-set apiece.

In the third set, Alcaraz broke in the fourth game and then held on to the advantage to take a 2-1 lead. But it was Jarry who started the fourth on top. The world no. 28 who broke early and built a 3-0 lead, however, Alcaraz broke back in the seventh game and then broke one more time to clinch the three hour and 58 minute contest 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 7-5.

With the win Alcaraz is now 43-4 this season. He has already won five titles from six finals and is looking set for a deep run in his third main draw appearance at SW19.

Berrettini Marches On

2021 finalist Matteo Berrettini moved into the fourth round with a straight sets win over 19th seed Alexander Zverev.

The world no. 38 served 15 aces and won 86% first serve points to beat the world no. 21 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5). There was just one break of serve in the entire match and it was the Italian who broke the German in the first set.

Both produced a strong service performance but it was Berrettini who won the key moment to seal victory in two hours and 33 minutes.

Berrettini, who went down to Novak Djokovic in the 2021 final, had begun his Wimbledon challenge with a 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 victory over compatriot Lorenzo Sonego in the opening round and then he ousted 15th seed Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round.

The Italian is a terrific grass court player and went 9-0 on the surface last year, winning two titles in Stuttgart and Queen’s. He went 11-1 in 2021, losing only in the Wimbledon final after triumphing at Queen’s. He is 3-1 on grass this year.

Berrettini will give Alcaraz a tough fight. Can he reach the quarterfinals again?
