Medvedev Rallies to Beat Fucsovics

For the second time in his fifth attempt Daniil Medvedev is into the fourth round at Wimbledon. The world no. 3, who has been in exceptional form this year, will now be eyeing his maiden quarterfinal at SW19, as he had lost in the round of 16 in 2021.

Medvedev, who won the first two rounds in straight sets, lost the first set of his third round match against Marton Fucsovics on Saturday after the Hungarian got the solitary break of the opening set.

Medvedev did not allow Fucsovics to break again in the match, while he broke the world no. 67 once in each of the next three sets to win the three hour contest 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

The former no. 1 had beaten Britain’s Arthur Fery 7-5, 6-4, 6-3 in the first round and then he ousted Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in the second round.

The 20-time tour-level champion improved his season record to 44-8 on Saturday. The 2021 US Open champion has featured in six finals this year and has won five of them. This is his best run at a Grand Slam this year, after a third round defeat in Melbourne and a shock first round upset in Paris. Lehecka Wins a Thriller Against Paul

Last year’s ATP NextGen runner-up Jiri Lehecka has impressed in the Grand Slams this year. The 21-year-old Czech, who was a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open, is now one away from reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.

Lehecka, the world no. 37, held off a spirited comeback effort from the 16th seed Tommy Paul on Saturday to move into the fourth round of the tournament.

Dominating the first set, Lehecka broke the American twice to take a 1-0 lead. He then consolidated his lead by taking the second set in the tiebreak. But just when it seemed things were going the Czech’s way, Paul made a comeback, taking the third set in a tiebreak. The fourth set too went into the tiebreak. First Paul built a 6-2 lead in the tiebreak. Then Lehecka came back in it, but squandered a match point at 7-8. Paul finally capitalised on a seventh set point in the set to even the match at two sets apiece.

With momentum shifted towards Paul, Lehecka brought out his A-game in the final set and he broke the world no. 15 twice to seal a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 (9-11), 6-2 win in three hours and 50 minutes.

Lehecka was not broken in the first tw rounds, beating Sebastian Ofner 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round and Francisco Cerundolo 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 in the second round.
